In 1999, Christina Bynum-Breaux visited a local middle school to offer encouragement and support to students in need. During that visit, she met seven young people who were struggling with food insecurity, unstable housing, and emotional hardship. They were doing their best to succeed while carrying burdens far beyond their years.

What Christina encountered that day revealed a deeper, ongoing need. These students did not simply need temporary assistance. They needed consistent, caring adults who would listen to them, advocate for them, and walk beside them through difficult seasons.

Rather than turning away, Christina chose to respond with her whole heart.

She began providing practical support, advocacy, and encouragement, building relationships rooted in dignity, trust, and long-term commitment. She showed up when life was uncertain, celebrated successes, and stood beside young people in moments of fear and doubt.

What started as a small, grassroots effort grew as more young people and families sought stability, guidance, and hope. In 2009, this growing work formally became Stepping Stones Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving youth in crisis.

Stepping Stones Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to serving youth in crisis throughout North Texas by providing the right tools to make positive life choices.

From the beginning, Stepping Stones has focused on more than meeting immediate needs. The organization was built on the belief that lasting change happens through relationships, accountability, and steady support over time.

By addressing urgent challenges such as food insecurity, housing instability, and emotional well-being — while also investing in confidence, life skills, and personal growth — Stepping Stones helps young people build strong foundations for their futures.

Over the years, this commitment has grown into a trusted network of programs, partners, and supporters who meet youth where they are and walk with them as they move toward independence and stability.

Continuing The Mission

Today, Stepping Stones Foundation continues its founding vision under the leadership of Executive Director Katie Bynum. Founded by her mother, Christina Bynum-Breaux, the organization has long been rooted in meeting urgent needs while walking alongside young people toward stability and hope.

After gaining years of nonprofit and for-profit operational experience, Katie’s return to lead the organization represents a meaningful homecoming. It is an opportunity to honor her mother’s legacy while guiding the foundation into its next chapter of growth and impact.

Drawing on her background in operational oversight, strategic execution, and organizational development, Katie guides program growth, community partnerships, and overall impact. More than credentials, she leads with deep personal investment, understanding that behind every statistic is a young person searching for safety, belonging, and opportunity.

A Legacy of Showing Up

Stepping Stones Foundation exists because people continue to choose consistency over convenience and relationships over quick solutions.

From Christina’s first meeting with seven struggling students in 1999 to the hundreds of youth served each year today, the organization has remained rooted in one powerful belief: stability changes lives.

Through community partnerships, family volunteers, and multigenerational service, Stepping Stones fosters a culture where generosity is modeled, learned, and passed forward. Young people are not only supported in crisis — they are reminded that they matter, that they belong, and that their future holds possibility.

Every step forward reflects the same commitment that started it all: showing up, walking alongside youth, and helping them build brighter, more secure futures — one step at a time.
